Australia backs Azerbaijan on Nagorno Karabakh - envoy

Australia has said it supports the position of Azerbaijan in the country’s conflict with neighboring Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh, according to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

The statement was made by Ian Biggs, the Australian ambassador to Turkey who is also accredited in Azerbaijan, in a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on Thursday.

Biggs expressed hope that the long-standing conflict would be settled peacefully soon.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a precarious cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces have since occupied Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding Azerbaijani regions in defiance of international law. Numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered negotiations have been fruitless so far.
