Georgia offers mediation to settle its neighbors’ bitter conflict
Georgia is ready to assist in settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze said on a visit to Baku Wednesday.
"South Caucasus is a single organism and it cannot be divided," Vashadze told a news conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov. "All three South Caucasus states [Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia] should understand that we are in the same situation, and our independence and sovereignty is inseparably linked. If Georgia’s mediation in the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is needed, we are ready for that."
The Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims. Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. A ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks brokered by US, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.
