FM: Azerbaijan may table Karabakh conflict at UN SC
Baku may raise the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh at the U.N. Security Council, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told reporters Wednesday.
He was commenting on initiatives that Azerbaijan could undertake after securing a non-permanent seat on the U.N. council in 2012-2013 at Monday’s elections.
"Three of the council’s five permanent members -- the United States, Russia and France – co-chair the [mediating] OSCE Minsk Group. We will discuss with them tabling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict at the UN SC," Mammadyarov said.
The minister reminded Azerbaijan insists that Armenia pull out of the seven regions around Nagorno Karabakh, which have also been occupied since a 1990s war, to build confidence between the conflict parties. "Only after that can we tackle comprehensive solution of the problem."
Mammadyarov said "no one expects" such a territorial dispute to be settled overnight, but the Prague process is in place which envisions a stage-by-stage settlement.
