Iraq scrutinizing unauthorized visit to shrines
The Iraqi embassy in Baku has launched scrutiny into a recent visit
by a group of Azerbaijanis to the country's shrines without
obtaining valid visas. The diplomatic mission has already forwarded
a relevant inquiry to Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry, Ambassador
Arshad Esmaeel said.
Between 100 and 150 Azerbaijani nationals have visited Iraq's holy Islamic sites in the cities of Karbala and Najaf.
"Their passports had visa stamps [allegedly] from the Iraqi embassy," Esmaeel told journalists. "But I did not issue the visas. I have sent queries to the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry and the Iraqi Interior Ministry to scrutinize the matter."
