Party exec reveals data on Azerbaijan's military
Russian experts acknowledge that Azerbaijan has the biggest army in
the South Caucasus, an Azerbaijani MP says.
Referring to Russian media reports, he said the country's armed forces include 95,000 ground troops, 8,000 Air Force and air defense personnel.
Zahid Oruj said in parliament Friday that Azerbaijan's 2,500-people strong National Guard and 8,000-people strong interior troops, just like other military units, are able to ward off any threat. Military machinery is in abundance as well. It includes 292 tanks and 706 armored vehicles, he said.
Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov interrupted the MP's address, saying there was no need to make such statements while addressing parliament. "Forces blaming Azerbaijan for rapid armament could take advantage of this information."
But Oruj replied that none of this content was a military secret. He noted that President Ilham Aliyev had issued instructions to hold a major military parade on May 9. He added that the event will allow to display Azerbaijan's military might.
