Law on ex-presidents passes first hearing in Azerbaijan

The constitutional law on providing support for former Azerbaijani presidents and their families passed the first hearing in the Azerbaijani parliament on Tuesday.

110 members of the Milli Majlis voted for the draft law, while three opposed it, and one abstained.

According to the bill, the law will apply to people who have held the presidency, people who acted as presidents but died, presidents whose powers were suspended, as well as members of their families.

The law does not apply to impeached presidents.

The ex-president will receive a monthly pension amounting to 50 percent of the salary of the incumbent president. In the case of the death of an ex-president, his wife will receive these retirement benefits. In the absence of his wife, his children will receive the pension when they reach the age of 18.

The bill provides the ex-president with a state car, a driver and three bodyguards.

Ex-presidents and their spouses will also be provided with diplomatic passports. Their inviolability will be protected by the law.
