Armenia should be ready for fresh hostilities - defense chief
Armenia should be ready for the resumption of military action in
the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict zone, its defense minister
said.
Seyran Ohanian said that in the current state of "no peace, no war", his country was trying to preserve the balance of forces by making changes in its military.
Asked about the potential impact of the disturbances that followed the February 19 presidential poll on the peace process, Ohanian said negotiations with Azerbaijan were under way as planned, but the upheaval inside the country could not but affect Armenia's international image.
The mass protests that followed the election were quelled on March 1. Armenian opposition had refused to recognize the results of the election won by Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian, charging vote rigging and taking to the streets. 28 people were reported killed in the clashes and hundreds were injured. Although the state of emergency announced immediately after the clashes was later cancelled under international pressure, the country is essentially under military rule.
