US historian brands 'genocide' claims a lie

30 April 2008 21:37 (UTC+04:00)
The Armenian claims that 1.5 million of their kinsmen were killed from 1915 to 1917 under an Ottoman Empire campaign of deportation have no merit, a US historian says.
"After researching US, British and German archives, I arrived at a conclusion that the Armenian claims concerning the 1915 developments are a lie," Turkish media quoted Guente Levy as saying.
He noted that economic crisis was rife during World War I, and 40 per cent of the Ottoman army perished from diseases or shortages. "At a time the Ottoman Empire was unable to meet the needs of its own soldiers, Armenians' saying 'Ottoman Turks did not take care of us' is baseless and meaningless," the historian said.
Levy said a number of Armenians served in the British, French and Russian military during World War I with the sole aim of establishing independent states.
The American scholar has written a book about the 1915 developments.
