Pope praises Azerbaijan's exemplary religious tolerance
Pope Benedict XVI has praised the religious tolerance in Azerbaijan
that has been repeatedly cited by international observers.
"I believe this tolerance can set an example for other former Soviet republics," the pontiff said in a meeting with Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia's Catholic clerics in the Vatican.
Azerbaijan was represented at the meeting by the head of the Catholic Church Jan Capla.
The Pope said despite advances in the countries that gained independence after the Soviet collapse in 1991, a number of problems remain unresolved. "There are many poor people here who were forced out of their homes by wars."
At the same time, Benedict XVI welcomed the fact that people of diverse ethnic groups and creeds live side by side in these countries.
