Iran says backs Azerbaijan’s UN SC bid
Iran supports Azerbaijan’s bid for a non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, Ambassador Mahammad Bagir Bahrami has said, according to the Iranian embassy in Baku.
Bahrami said Tehran believes that Azerbaijan’s UN SC membership "meets the region’s interests".
Azerbaijan has put forward its candidacy for the UN SC non-permanent membership for the term of 2012-2013, and has been lobbying support for its bid in the past few months. The elections will be held on October 21.
Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovenia have all been nominated for the one available seat for the Eastern European region.
