2,100 crimes committed in Azerbaijan in 2010: UN

2,100 crimes were committed in Azerbaijan in 2010, with about 20 percent of them perpetrated with the use of firearms, a UN agency has said.

In its annual Global Study on Homicide, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said, however, that the crime rate has not sharply increased in the country in recent years.

According to the study, 77.5 percent of murder victims are men aged 30-44, while the remaining 22.5 percent are women. The most crimes were committed in the capital Baku, it said.

In Armenia, which has a much smaller population than Azerbaijan, the number of crimes was higher – 2,800 – last year, UNODC said.

Worldwide, 468,000 crimes were committed in 2010, with a large share of the offenses reported in Latin America and Africa, the study said.
