Azeri Islamic party leader sentenced to 12 years in jail

The Azerbaijan Islamic Party (AIP) leader was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Baku court on Friday. Haji Movsum Samadov and several inferiors were convicted on charges of attempts to set up a criminal group to plan terror attacks and to overthrow the government.

Deputy chairman of the party was convicted by the Grave Crimes Court for 11 years, while head of AIP’s Astara regional organization – to 11 1/2 years, and an AIP member - to 11 years. Another member of the party was handed down a 11-year suspended sentence.

Samadov’s brother-in-law and relative were each convicted to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The defendants were arrested on January 7.
