U.S. keen on protection of Caspian energy infrastructure

US Ambassador in Baku Matthew Bryza has said that the United States has long been in talks with the Azerbaijani government on the protection of energy infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.

Bryza told journalists on Thursday that the U.S. and Azerbaijan are exchanging experience in exposing and eliminating potential risks in the resource-rich basin.

"Mutual exchange of experience is aimed at proper protection against all potential risks posed to offshore energy infrastructure. The U.S. has extensive experience in this area.

"Possible risks could include natural disasters. For instance, a powerful hurricane or technological risks, as was the case in the Gulf of Mexico [oil spill] last year. Terror threats should not be ruled either."

Bryza noted that the U.S. has no plans to station troops in the Caspian, and ongoing consultations aim to jointly evaluate potential risks.
