Armenian occupation of Azeri land must end, Erdogan tells UN
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told the United Nations that the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijan’s territory that has persisted for many years must end.
"The Nagorno Karabakh problem staying unresolved is unacceptable," Erdogan said while addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994.
The UN has passed four resolutions on an unconditional Armenian pullout, but none of them have been implemented to date.
Peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
