Azerbaijan, Russia launch ops on border to crack down on crime
Azerbaijani law enforcers on Monday launched a large-scale operation jointly with Russia on both sides of the two countries’ shared border, Azerbaijan’s interior ministry said.
The operation, which is carried out in the borderline regions every year, aims to expose instances of arms smuggling and drug trafficking and prevent illegal migration and other violations of law.
The operation is underway in the northwestern Gakh, Zagatala and Balakan regions as well as Guba, Gusar and Khachmaz in northern Azerbaijan, the Baku-based APA news agency reported.
Eyewitnesses in Zagatala say police posts have been set up in the region, with police officers and armed interior troops inspecting vehicles entering and leaving the region.
