Montenegro, Azerbaijan sign deals, upbeat on closer ties

Montenegro and Azerbaijan on Friday signed agreements on mutual promotion of investments, economic, cultural and tourism cooperation during Montenegrin President Philip Vuyanovic’s visit to Baku.

President Ilham Aliyev, hosting his Montenegrin counterpart prior to the signing, said his first official visit would "go down in history".

"I am confident that the visit will be very successful and its outcomes will be very positive," Aliyev said. "Our bilateral relations are developing with much success and, I would say, very rapidly. In a short time, we have held both political and economic consultations. Both sides are making a valuable contribution to the development of these relations."

President Vuyanovic also said his three-day visit, which started on Thursday, would significantly promote the development of Montenegrin-Azerbaijani cooperation.

"I think political ties between the two countries will lay a foundation of our economic relations and develop them," he said.

President Aliyev said in a media statement that strengthening economic ties with Montenegro should be in focus, noting that Azerbaijan was interested in bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and transport.

The Azerbaijani leader stressed that the two countries have no differences on regional issues. He said the Montenegrin president had been briefed on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and expressed hope that the long-standing dispute would find its fair solution in the foreseeable future.

Vuyanovic said Montenegro supports the United Nations and European organizations’ positions on the Karabakh conflict.

He also stressed the importance of making efforts to promote mutual investments.
