Azeri envoy sends protest to US Congress

BAKU – Azerbaijan's ambassador to the United States has sent an appeal to the House of Representatives members condemning an event on the self-proclaimed republic run by ethnic Armenians in the occupied Nagorno Karabakh region held in Washington on Tuesday, the Azerbaijani embassy in the U.S. told AssA-Irada.

The event was organized by the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Armenia’s embassy and U.S.-based Armenian organizations.

In the letter, sent to 435 members of the US Congress, Ambassador Yashar Aliyev pointed out that no country recognizes the separatist regime established in the occupied Azerbaijani territories.

He wrote that organizers of the event aimed to distract public attention in the U.S. from the ongoing occupation of Azerbaijan’s land.

The ambassador called on the congressmen not to attend such events aimed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, which is a strategic partner of the U.S.

Armenian armed forces have occupied about 20 percent of neighboring Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, since a war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
