TB widespread in Azerbaijan: WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) has included Azerbaijan in the list of countries with a high rate of tuberculosis infection in its annual report, according to the United Nations website.
The report said a new type of tuberculosis is spreading in Azerbaijan and other former Soviet republics that is resistant to medicine and treatment, and the disease cannot be immediately diagnosed in some of the countries. This indicates that efforts to reduce the TB spread in Eastern Europe countries including Azerbaijan have been largely fruitless, WHO said.
Ogtay Gozalov of WHO’s Regional Office for Europe says that tuberculosis spreads not only among immigrants and inmates, who are considered the riskiest groups of population, but also other groups.
"If urgent action is not taken by the [WHO] member states, we might face a dire situation in the future," Gozalov said.
WHO has developed a plan of activities worth $5 billion to counter the spread of the disease, which it said was "an alarming trend".
