Separatists claim shot down Azeri spy drone

BAKU – An Azerbaijani spy drone has been shot down in an Armenia-occupied region, Armenian media reported.

The reports, quoting the "defense ministry" spokesman of the self-proclaimed republic run by ethnic Armenians in the occupied Nagorno Karabakh region, said the plane was shot down in the Asgaran region Monday, without giving details.

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry was not immediately available for comment.

Azerbaijan unveiled its new drones at a military parade in June amid continuing tensions over Karabakh, which Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan invaded in a war in the 1990s that left around 30,000 dead.

Azerbaijan has repeatedly warned to use force to free the occupied region if internationally mediated peace negotiations do not yield results.

Yerevan has threatened large-scale retaliation if Baku launches military action.
