25 percent of Azeris overweight – WHO

BAKU – The most dangerous health problem in Azerbaijan is excessive weight in 25 percent of the people, says a representative of the World Health Organization’s office in the country.

Sevil Asadova told a news briefing on the sidelines of a WHO bureau meeting in Baku on Monday that obesity is caused by malnutrition, and much work is ahead to resolve the problem.

Asadova said that though plenty of fruits and vegetables are available in Azerbaijan, people prefer meat and butter, and don’t consume enough fruits, vegetables and even milk, which is adversely affecting their health.

The WHO expert said further that just like in Europe, many death cases unrelated to infectious diseases in Azerbaijan result from cardio-vascular irregularities.

According to her, research by WHO experts revealed that tobacco use is widespread in Azerbaijan only among men, with less than 1 percent of women using tobacco. Therefore, women’s tobacco use in the country cannot be considered a problem, Asadova said.
