NDI’s Baku office resumes work - report

BAKU – The office of US National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Azerbaijan resumed work on Monday, Radio Liberty reported.

NDI’s Resident Country Director Alex Grigorievs said he was in the office but declined further comment.

The US embassy in Baku was not available for comment either.

This March, the Azerbaijani government announced new rules on the state registration of foreign NGOs’ subsidiaries and representations. Reports later circulated about the closure of the NDI Baku office, which is mainly involved in election monitoring and work with youths.

Michael Greene, US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director for Azerbaijan, said earlier that NDI submitted its paperwork for registration to the Ministry of Justice in late July.

US Ambassador in Baku Matthew Bryza has confirmed in an interview with Radio Liberty that NDI has submitted all necessary documents.

"We [the US embassy] are working on that as well. Many in the government understand that NDI’s main mission overlaps with a number of key missions of their own…For this reason, I have substantial grounds to believe that soon NDI will resume its normal operation in Azerbaijan."
