New protest over dying lake in Iran

BAKU – A group of people picketed the Iranian embassy in Baku on Thursday over the drying-out of Lake Orumieh and what they believe is pressure on the protesters, in another such protest in the past week.

The police dispersed the participants of the unauthorized protest, organized by the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC), but the protesters managed to submit a statement to the diplomatic mission.

Lake Orumieh, Iran's largest lake, has shrunk by some 60 percent in recent years due to drought and misguided development policies. Environmentalists warn that unless something is done, the lake will disappear forever.
