Azeri envoy hopes for passage of UN resolution on occupied territory

BAKU – Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territory is on the United Nations agenda and whether or not the issue will be put on discussion depends on Baku’s decision, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to UN Agshin Mehdiyev has said.

"Whether this issue will be debated depends on progress in negotiations [on settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict]. The negotiations are currently at a very sensitive phase. Therefore, we will take up the resolution for discussions whenever we receive an order from the country’s leadership."

Mehdiyev said be believes that a UN resolution on the Karabakh problem will be passed.

"I hope very much that the resolution will be adopted and more countries will support it," he said.

Armenian armed forces have occupied about 20 percent of neighboring Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, since a war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
