Azerbaijan recognizes Libya’s interim council
BAKU – Azerbaijan recognizes Libya’s interim council, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"Azerbaijan respects the will of the Libyan people and recognizes the National Transitional Council as the government of Libya," it said in a statement.
The flag of the interim council was hoisted at the Libyan embassy in Baku on August 24, two days after the Libyan flag was lowered at the diplomatic mission.
Charge D’Affairs Naji Ghazala, who raised the flag, told reporters that the victory of revolutionaries was being marked by the embassy staff.
"Thank God, dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been toppled. We are celebrating this with joy," Ghazala said.
According to the diplomat, the hoisting of the flag means that the Libyan embassy recognizes the National Transitional Council and "is no longer inferior to dictator Gaddafi".
Ghazala noted that about 60 countries have already recognized the legitimacy of the interim council.
After a six-month conflict, rebels fighting to end Gaddafi’s rule control most of the capital Tripoli and the country.
