Ambassadors to UN hold talks in Azerbaijan

BAKU – The ambassadors of numerous countries to the United Nations visiting Azerbaijan held talks with officials and parliament members on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, hosting the diplomats, called on their countries to support Azerbaijan’s bid for non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council in 2012-2013, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.

Regarding the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, Mammadyarov said world countries already admit that a lingering status quo in the long-standing dispute is unacceptable, adding that it is possible to reach a solution strictly within Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.

During the ambassadors’ meetings in parliament, Samad Seyidov, who chairs the parliamentary international relations committee, expressed confidence in strengthening Azerbaijan’s position in the UN and expanding its activities.

Benin’s ambassador to the UN Jean-Francis Regis Zinsou said such visits are important for both developing bilateral ties and stepping up work on issues of humanity.

Camillo Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines said agreement had been reached on a common position in foreign policies of the Caribbean countries, adding that these 14 countries would defend Azerbaijan’s stance in the UN.

The representatives of Cambodia, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Mavriki, Namibia, St. Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Seychelles Islands, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Jamaica and Zimbabwe have been on a visit to Azerbaijan since Monday.

The ambassadors are due to visit the northern town of Guba to become familiar with the mass burial of the people massacred by Armenian nationalists in 1918.
