Another military commissar arrested in Azerbaijan

BAKU – A military commissar in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan autonomous republic has been arrested on charges of corruption, a law enforcement source told the local media.

Lieut.-Col. Jahangir Hasanov, the Ordubad region’s military commissar, faces charges including illegal possession of firearms and explosives; as well as abuse of power.

The Nakhchivan commissariat, which drafts men for military service, has confirmed Hasanov’s detention.

Earlier, head of personnel at Azerbaijan’s Military Commissariat and military commissars of numerous regions of the country were detained on corruption charges. A total of 20 employees of drafting units have been arrested so far.

Military Prosecutor Khanlar Valiyev said in late July that Azerbaijan’s military prosecution bodies filed criminal charges over 58 cases of corruption and bribery in the first half of 2011.
