Two Iranian citizens were shot dead late on Monday after showing
armed resistance to Azerbaijani frontier guards.
Three residents of Azerbaijan's southern Bilasuvar district, including two who had prior criminal record, had conspired with Iranian nationals and attempted to smuggle alcoholic drinks to the neighboring country.
During a shooting that erupted, the two Iranians were shot dead in retaliatory fire from the State Border Service officers, the Interior Ministry said.
The three Azerbaijani nationals who managed to escape from the site have already been detained.
