Former Swedish PACE rep criticizes Armenia’s policy
BAKU – Armenia’s erroneous policy leads to the disruption of peace and stability in the region, a former vice-president of the Council of Europe parliamentary assembly was quoted by Azerbaijan’s state news agency AzerTAj as saying.
"World countries and international organizations should step up pressure for Armenia to take a more open and transparent position in the negotiating process on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh," said Goran Lindblad of Sweden, a former PACE co-rapporteur on Armenia.
Armenian armed forces have occupied about 20 percent of neighboring Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, since a war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
Lindblad said Azerbaijan’s economy is growing and its military power increasing, noting that the outbreak of a new war would further weaken Armenia economically.
He added that he supports a settlement of the Karabakh conflict based strictly on agreed principles and international law.
