BAKU – The number of attempts to smuggle drugs to Azerbaijan from neighboring Iran has increased, head of Azerbaijan's border service Elchin Guliyev has said.

"Though drug trafficking and the number of attempts to smuggle narcotics from Iran has risen, such bids continue to be countered by Azerbaijani frontier guards and other relevant bodies," Guliyev told reporters Thursday.

He noted that cutting edge equipment used worldwide is being applied to protect Azerbaijan’s borders.

"It is as a result of these efforts that about 90 percent of border trespassing attempts have been prevented in recent years. This is a remarkable indicator on a worldwide scale in terms of combating international terrorism, illegal migration and illegal circulation of drugs," Guliyev said.
