Azeri youths protest China over Uighurs’ rights

BAKU – A group of youths attempted to protest outside the Chinese embassy in Baku on Wednesday over what they believe is violation of Uighur Turks’ rights in China.

The police did not allow participants of the unauthorized protest to submit a statement to the diplomatic mission. 10 youths representing the opposition Popular Front, Musavat and Azerbaijan Democratic Parties as well as independent organizations were detained.

14 protesters were killed along with two policemen and two hostages earlier this month during a clash in China’s far western region of Xinjiang in the worst violence there in a year.

Xinjiang is home to many Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking people native to the area, many of whom resent the growing presence of majority Han Chinese in Xinjiang.

Xinjiang is strategically vital to China and Beijing has shown no sign of loosening its grip on the territory, which accounts for one-sixth of China's land mass and holds rich deposits of oil and gas and borders Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Central Asia.
