Egypt backs Karabakh settlement in line with UN resolutions

BAKU – Egypt is "pursuing closely" the ongoing international efforts to resolve the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and is "looking forward" to the success of the peace process to solve the conflict in accord with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the Egyptian embassy in Baku told AssA-Irada.

The UN has passed four resolutions urging an unconditional pullout of Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories.

The embassy said in a statement that Egypt takes "a great interest" in the stability of the Caucasus region as a part of security of the whole region, and reaffirms its position regarding the importance of settling disputes peacefully and in compliance with international law.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since the war. Peace talks, brokered by the US, Russian and French co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
