UN report lists Azeri arms imports in 2010

BAKU – The United Nations has released a report listing military machinery and weaponry purchased by Azerbaijan from a number of countries in 2010.

According to reports submitted to the UN Register of Conventional Arms by arms exporters, Turkey sold 15 armored vehicles to Azerbaijan last year, while Ukraine sold 71 weaponless BTR-70 vehicles, seven Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers, one Mi-24 helicopter, and one anti-tank rocket launcher. Azerbaijan purchased from Slovakia one automatic cannon installed on combat vehicles and helicopters, while Belarus sold 30 cannons and one Su-25 fighter jet. Bosnia and Herzegovina sold the country 10 RAK-12 multiple rocket systems and 20,000 rockets for them, the UN Register said.

As for small caliber weapons, Azerbaijan bought 110 pistols from Turkey, 100 pistols from Austria and 3,000 submachine guns and other weapons from Ukraine, according to the report.

The UN Register also listed weaponry sold to Armenia, with which Azerbaijan faces a long-standing conflict. It said that Armenia purchased a large amount of firearms and two L39 Albatros fighter jets from Ukraine in 2010.

Though Armenia did not submit a report to the UN, Ukraine disclosed general information about its arms sales to the country. It exported 230 pistols, 60 carbines, 2,501 machine guns, and 16,500 submachine guns to the South Caucasus republic.

Bosnia and Herzegovina said it exported 200 mine launchers, while Austria sold 50 pistols to Armenia.

Only a handful of countries have so far submitted their reports to the UN Register, and more information is expected to be disclosed by the end of 2011 as more countries disclose data on their arms sales.
