Israel ‘not surprised’ by Azeri support for Palestine

TEL-AVIV – Azerbaijani leaders’ recent statement that Baku would vote for an independent Palestinian state at the United Nations comes as "no surprise" for Israel, a senior official in Tel-Aviv has said.

"America, Russia and a number of other countries support the idea of establishing a Palestinian state as well, but not unilaterally," Foreign Ministry deputy director general Pinchas Avivi told Russia’s IzRus news portal. "Many support the Palestinians’ drive for independence, but only based on the outcomes of their talks with Israel."

The UN General Assembly is due to vote on the issue of Palestine’s independence in September.

President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov recently said Azerbaijan backs establishing an independent Palestinian state with the capital in Eastern al-Quds (Jerusalem). Mammadyarov said the country would vote for Palestine’s independence at the UN.
