Minsk Group co-chairs in Baku for talks

BAKU – OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh arrived in Baku on Thursday.

The US, Russian and French diplomats are expected to meet with President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

The co-chairs will further leave Baku for the Armenian capital Yerevan and then visit Khankandi, the center of the self-proclaimed republic run by ethnic Armenians in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Karabakh region.

Russian co-chair Igor Popov refused to speak to journalists upon arrival, adding that all questions will be answered after the mediators’ official meetings.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including the Nagorno Karabakh region, has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
