FM: Azerbaijan’s NATO admission ‘hypothetical’
BAKU – Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has said Azerbaijan’s admission to NATO is "hypothetical" and recent accession to the non-aligned movement, a group of countries that do not join military blocs, will bring the country more benefits than membership in any military alliances.
In an interview with the Russian Interfax news agency, Mammadyarov noted that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) includes 120 states -- all UN members -- and it is "another crucial forum" for advancing Azerbaijan’s interests in all areas.
"This also concerns Azerbaijan’s role as a leader in the region and stepping up this role, our political ambitions, our economic development and, finally, informing [the world community] of Azerbaijan’s fair stance on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict [with Armenia].
"In other words, in all senses, the advantages of membership in the Non-Aligned Movement for a country like Azerbaijan, with a population of 9 million, are more positive than the prospect of accession to any military blocs," Mammadyarov said.
Established at the Belgrade conference in 1961, the NAM includes the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
