Karabakh mediators to visit Baku Thursday – reports
BAKU – OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh are due to arrive in Azerbaijan on Thursday, Azerbaijani media reported.
The US, Russian and French co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group are reportedly expected to meet with President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
The co-chairs will further leave Baku for the Armenian capital Yerevan and then visit the Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region where ethnic Armenians are running a self-proclaimed republic, the reports say.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev made proposals on settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict following a fruitless round of talks held with his mediation in Kazan on June 24. A letter expressing the proposals was delivered to Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last Friday.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov is due to leave for Russia on Sunday to discuss the current state of affairs in Karabakh settlement.
Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including the Nagorno Karabakh region, has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994.
