BAKU – A regional English language center will be established at a private Azerbaijani university, according to a memorandum signed with the British Council on Tuesday.

Ahmad Valiyev, Odlar Yurdu University’s principal, who co-signed the memo, said at the signing that the center will allow both students and faculty members to increase their knowledge and take part in the British Council’s programs.

"The signing of the memorandum has three objectives: teaching English at the highest level; preparing teachers complying with British standards; and implementation of various education projects," Valiyev said.

British Council Regional Director Michael Bird praised his organization’s cooperation with Odlar Yurdu University. He said the British Council was interested in cooperating with Azerbaijan in the areas deemed a priority for the country.

"There is a need for the English language in Azerbaijan and we are doing our best to meet it," Bird said.

British Council Country Director Paul Clementson in turn said the organization has offered 15 cooperation programs to the Azerbaijani university.
