Catholic church registered in Azerbaijan
BAKU – The Catholic Church has been registered in Azerbaijan, the state committee on religious organizations has said.
The Roman Catholic Church's Apostolic Prefecture was granted a certificate on its state registration on Thursday, according to the committee.
The Holy Throne on Wednesday ratified the agreement on the legal status of the Catholic Church in the country, and an historic event has taken place that is tremendously important both for the Vatican and Azerbaijan, the Vatican’s apostolic nuncio to Azerbaijan Claudio Gugerotti said at the presentation ceremony.
According to Gugerotti, the agreement signed with Azerbaijan is one of its kind for the Vatican.
"Azerbaijan has once again proven what a tolerant country it is," he said. "The whole world can now see that. I am confident that this document [the agreement], which will be welcomed by the international community, will go down in people’s memories as a major historical event."
513 religious communities are registered in Azerbaijan.
