Postal stamps on Karabakh released in U.S.

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Washington-based Karabakh Foundation has released postal stamps devoted to Nagorno Karabakh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation, for the first time in the United States’ history.

The stamps show ancient historical monuments, Albanian churches and the Shusha Tower, which is located in the historic Azerbaijani town of Shusha in Karabakh, according to the foundation.

The stamps will be put on sale. The proceeds from the sales will be spent by the foundation to implement cultural projects.

The foundation will also present them to major US stamp collectors free of charge.

The Karabakh Foundation works to familiarize Americans with Azerbaijan, particularly Karabakh, as well as the whole South Caucasus region, and to promote Azerbaijani culture and music in the U.S.

Nagorno Karabakh has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted up to one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Years of OSCE-brokered peace talks have brought few tangible results.
