BAKU – Azerbaijan and Iran will discuss ways of expanding relations between their parliaments as well as economic and political issues during forthcoming discussions in Baku, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has said upon arrival in the Azerbaijani capital.

"Azerbaijan-Iran relations have a long history," Larijani told reporters on Thursday. "In the Soviet times the relations between our nations were limited, but with the gaining of independence [by Azerbaijan in 1991], bilateral relations began to develop."

According to Larijani, also on the agenda during his visit are regional issues, the Israel-Palestine conflict and the situation in north African countries.

The Iranian speaker is due to meet President Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Artur Rasizada, Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov and other Azerbaijani officials. He will also familiarize himself with Azerbaijan’s ancient historical monuments in Icherisheher (Old City) downtown Baku.

Larijani is also scheduled to visit Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second largest city. He will pay tribute to the grave of the world-famous Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi and tour the city.
