Turkey did not sell equipment to rebel region - embassy

BAKU – Turkey has dismissed media reports saying a Turkish company sold equipment for the construction of an airport in the Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

The reports claimed that Turkey’s Demirci Makina company had sold construction materials and equipment to be used by the separatists in rebuilding the , airport near Khankandi the center of the self-proclaimed Nagorno Karabakh republic.

The Turkish embassy in Baku said given that Ankara recognizes Nagorno Karabakh as being part of Azerbaijan, it sends all goods being delivered to the region to Azerbaijani customs officers. Moreover, Turkey’s exports of any goods to Armenia are banned.

The airport near Khankandi has been closed since the outbreak of the Karabakh war in the early 1990s, which saw ethnic Armenian forces backed by Yerevan occupy the region amid fighting that left an estimated 30,000 dead.

Azerbaijan has said Armenia has no right to operate the airport in Khankandi, built in its occupied territories.
