BAKU – The United States is committed to developing cooperation with Azerbaijan and the two countries have great potential for its expansion, a senior US official said after talks on security in Baku on Friday.

Andrew Shapiro, Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, told the press that the U.S. shares interests with Azerbaijan on energy security and domestic reforms.

"At today’s meeting we expanded and deepened our cooperation in a number of key areas, including in safeguarding the infrastructure of the Caspian Sea and military cooperation," Shapiro said. "The US government is looking forward to strengthening bilateral cooperation on issues of mutual interest."

Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov, who headed the Azerbaijani delegation during the Security Dialogue, said the discussions focused on regional security, Euro-Atlantic cooperation and anti-terror combat. The parties also mulled ongoing joint security programs, he said.

"The two sides reached agreement to expand cooperation on all these issues in the future."

Azimov said the next round of security talks is due in Washington next year.
