UN criticized over failure to report drug growing in rebel region
BAKU – UN agencies are failing to include in their reports data on the cultivation of drugs in the Armenia-occupied territories of Azerbaijan, a senior Azerbaijani official has said.
"We have repeatedly appealed to them in this regard, but have not achieved this [inclusion of this information in the reports]," Ali Hasanov, Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of the state commission on fighting drugs, told a conference in Baku Wednesday.
He added that the UN office in Vienna recently sought to conduct relevant monitoring, but Armenia prevented it from taking place.
Azerbaijan faces a two-decade-long conflict with Armenia. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war.
