Azeri party leader gets six years in jail

BAKU – An Azerbaijani party leader was sentenced to six years in jail by a Baku court on Friday on charges of hooliganism.

Along with the Azerbaijan National Statehood Party chairman Nemet Panahly, his friend Jeyhun Farzullayev was handed down four years’ imprisonment on the same charges.

According to the indictment, the defendants used weapons to commit acts of hooliganism, inflicting injuries to others.

Panahly and Farzullayev were arrested in January under a lawsuit filed by Baku resident Eldaniz Rzayev, who claimed that he had been beaten by the two men.

The Azerbaijan National Statehood Party was established in 1994. In the early years of its activity, the party supported the government, but then drifted to the opposition. Panahly had been one of the leaders of the National Liberation Movement following the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991. He served as a state adviser in 1993-94.
