Top official warns groups aiding Azeri IDPs
BAKU – A senior official has said all organizations implementing projects to assist Azerbaijani displaced persons must make it clear that the projects aim to aid the people suffering in the aftermath of Armenia’s aggression.
"If any given organization or donor does not say this, the implementation of its project will not be allowed," warned Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov, who heads the state body for refugees and IDPs. "How could it be that you are implementing a project for the people in Azerbaijan who have lived as IDPs for 20 years, but you never mention the fact that they are suffering from the Armenian aggression. This is wrong."
700,000 Azerbaijanis were ousted from Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions during the armed conflict with neighboring Armenia that began in 1988 on Armenian territorial claims. 250,000 others were driven out of their historical lands in Armenia. The refugees and IDPs are currently settled in 62 cities and regions across Azerbaijan.
