Azerbaijan, Spain keen on closer co-op

BAKU – Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov visiting Spain on Thursday held talks with the country’s Secretary of State for Trade Alfredo Bonet on prospects for expanding bilateral relations and "subtleties" of cooperation within the European Union as well as opening a Spanish embassy in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told AssA-Irada.

Bonet said Spain is the second biggest investor in Latin America, next only to the United States. He said the country was interested in expanding its relations with Azerbaijan, stressing the importance of Spanish companies’ activity in boosting ties.

Mammadyarov underscored the significance of arranging a Spanish-Azerbaijani business forum in Baku. He said relevant legal documents on economic cooperation might be signed then between the two countries.

The Azerbaijani foreign minister arrived in Spain on Wednesday for a first official visit being paid between the two countries since Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991.
