Georgian-Azeri ties rising to new level – official

TBILISI – Georgia and Azerbaijan are strategic partners, and the already advanced relations are rising to an even higher level, Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze said after talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Tbilisi on Monday.

"We are fulfilling the task of our presidents on deepening relations between our countries in the political and economic spheres, as well as the rapprochement of our peoples," Vashadze said after the meeting at the Georgian Foreign Ministry, which lasted longer than expected.

Mammadyarov in turn said it was "hard to add anything" to Vashadze’s remarks. "We meet every six months, and with every meeting, fewer and fewer issues requiring solutions remain," he said.

The Azerbaijani foreign minister said after meeting Georgian parliament speaker David Bakradze on the same day that "a strong, successful and independent Georgia is part of Azerbaijan’s national security".

"This is the kind of Georgia that meets the interests of our country," Mammadyarov added.
