Azerbaijan to continue ‘strategic partnership’ with new Turkish govt

BAKU – The Azerbaijani government respects the Turkish people’s choice and will continue its policy of strategic partnership with the country’s newly elected authorities, a presidential aide has said on Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Turkey won by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party.

"The Turkish people have re-elected a government led by AKP (Justice and Development Party), opting to go on with Prime Minister Erdogan’s party," Ali Hasanov told reporters Monday. "They voted again for the policy pursued by AKP on the path of development and progress."

AKP won just under 50 percent of the votes in the AKP's largest electoral victory since it came to power in 2002. However, results show that AKP will fall short of the two-thirds majority needed to rewrite the constitution without other parties' cooperation.
