Azerbaijan toughens immigration rules

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s parliament has passed legislation toughening regulations concerning foreign nationals and non-citizens’ stay in the country.

According to the amended Administrative Offenses Code, approved at an extraordinary Milli Majlis session on Friday, if foreigners violate the laws on short-term stay in the country, they will have to pay a fine of 300 to 400 manats (up to over $500), and could also be deported.

Azerbaijani citizens or foreign permanent residents who invite foreign nationals to Azerbaijan and grant them a place of residence, but fail to ensure their departure after their permission to stay in the country expires, will face the same fine.

Also, officials will be charged 300 to 500 manats (up to $630) if they violate the rules on processing papers concerning foreign citizens’ stay in the country. In case of illegally hiring expatriates or non-citizens, government workers will be charged 3,000 to 5,000 manats ($6,300), while businesses will pay a fine of 30,000 to 35,000 manats (over $44,000).
