Moldova rules out pullout from regional group
A senior Moldovan official has ruled out the country's cessation
from the regional group GUAM that also comprises Georgia, Ukraine
and Azerbaijan.
"Moldova has no intention to withdraw from GUAM. We are simply discontent with the organization's activity," said Deputy Minister for Reintegration Ion Stavila.
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said earlier that the country's participation in the bloc was useless.
Stavila said Chisinau's disagreement was with the fact that no specific projects were being implemented within GUAM, despite existing potential for realizing various economic, energy and agriculture projects.
"We want these projects to be implemented in the near future," the Moldovan representative said.
GUAM Secretary General Valeri Chechelashvili has said the reports on Moldova's pullout from the group had been blown out of proportion.
"Moldova has not forwarded any official appeal on its cessation," he told reporters in Baku.
A two-day international conference, "Basic principles of the resolution of conflicts in the territories of GUAM states", started in the Azerbaijani capital on Tuesday. Besides the organization's member states, the event is attended by representatives of 11 countries, including officials and experts from the United States, Turkey, Britain, Germany, Israel, Poland, Romania, Austria and Baltic states.
